1960: Chain Gang By Sam Cooke

Composed by Sam Cooke and Charles Cook Jr, Sam’s elder brother. Recorded by Sam Cooke for his seventh studio album, Swing Low. The song was inspired after a chance meeting with an actual chain-gang of prisoners on a highway, seen while Sam was on tour. It reached No.9 in the UK and No.2 in the USA, on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart. Genres: Rhythm and Blues, Soul. The singer died in 1964, aged 33, from a gunshot wound. He is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California, USA.
