The song was inspired after a chance meeting with an actual chain-gang of prisoners on a highway, seen while Sam was on tour. The singer died in 1964, aged 33, from a gunshot wound. He is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California, USA.
