1960: Tell Laura I Love Her By Ricky Valance

Composed by Jeff Barry and Ben Raleigh. First performed by Ray Peterson in 1960. The most well known version, perhaps, of the song is by Welsh singer Ricky Valance who also recorded the song in 1960. This version reached No.1 in the United Kingdom. Tell Laura I Love Her tells the story of a teenage boy called Tommy who is in love with a girl called Laura. Although they are only teenagers, Tommy wants to marry Laura and so he enters a stock car race, hoping to win, and use the prize money to buy Laura a wedding ring. The car overturns and bursts into flames, fatally injuring Tommy. His last words are “Tell Laura I Love Her, my love for her will never die”.
