2005: You Raise Me Up By Westlife

Composed by Rolf Løvland of Irish-Norweigan band Secret Garden and Brendan Graham. First released as a single by the same band in 2002. It was originally composed as an instrumental piece and titled Silent Story. It was performed for the very first time at the funeral of Rolf Løvland’s mother. When asked about the strong resemblance to another song, Rolf said “There are similarities but no plagiarism. When I made You Raise Me Up I asked myself what is the inner essence of Irish music?” He later asked Irish novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham to write the lyrics. The song has since been covered by over one hundred other artists. The most well known version, perhaps, is that by Irish group Westlife. This version reached No.1 in Ireland and the United Kingdom and was Westlife’s thirteenth No.1 song in the United Kingdom. It was Westlife’s first single to be released following the departure of Brian McFadden from the group.
