Composed by Jeff Lynne of English rock band Electric Light Orchestra and recorded by the same band for their seventh studio album, Out of the Blue. The original title of the song was Dead End Street but this was changed during recording, perhaps to avoid confusion with a 1966 song of the same title by another band. As a novelty, initial copies of the 7 and 12 inch records were pressed in a transparent purple vinyl.
