1984: Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen

Composed and recorded by Bruce Springsteen for his seventh studio album, Born in the USA. The singer recorded the song in 1982 and it was released as a single from the album in 1984. The video was filmed at the Saint Paul Civic Center, Minnesota, USA over two nights. The first night was a pure video shoot and the second was on the opening night of Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A Tour. In the video, a young woman from the audience was invited onto the stage to dance along with the singer. The young woman was American actress Courteney Cox. Video director Brian De Palma had the actress flown in from New York City in the USA for this particular role in the video. However, Bruce Springsteen did not know until after who she was, thinking she was a pre-selected fan. The video won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Stage Performance. Dancing in the Dark earned Bruce Springsteen a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance. In 1984, a reader’s poll by Rolling Stone Magazine voted the song Single of the Year. The song has also been included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Genre: Pop Rock.
