1981: Japanese Boy by Aneka

Composed by Bobby Heatlie. Recorded by Aneka for her debut studio album, Aneka. The album was released by both the Elektra (in the USA) and Hansa record labels. It reached No.12 in Finland and No.19 in Switzerland. Aneka’s real name is Mary Sandeman and she was a Scottish folk singer. She retired from the music industry in 1986. The stage name Aneka was picked at random from a telephone directory by the composer (Bobby Heatlie) and the song producer, Neil Ross. Mary Sandeman then created a Japanese image under which to perform the song. Try as she might, the singer found it difficult to get away from her Japanese alter-ego, perhaps because of the popularity of the song and because she was so convincing in her role, people would always associate her with that image. Japanese Boy reached No.1 in multiple countries. Genres: Disco, New Wave. In 2002, it was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, on the fictional in-game radio station Flash FM.
