1974: Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me by Gladys Knight and The Pips

Composed by Jim Weatherly. First recorded commercially in 1973 by American country music singer Ray Price, under the title You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me. Jim Weatherly said he composed the song in 1971 and let his father-in-law first record it as a Christmas present for his (father-in-law’s) wife. The composer went on to say “I thought it was really strange that nobody had ever written a song with that title. Possibly somebody had but I’d never heard it so I just sat down and let this stream of consciousness happen. I basically wrote it in a very short period of time, probably 30 minutes or an hour.” R&B soul group Gladys Knight and The Pips recorded the song in 1974 with a slightly different title, Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me. It was included on their eleventh studio album, Imagination. Genre: Rhythm and Blues.
