1978: Summer Night City by Abba

Composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of Swedish pop group Abba and recorded by the same group. The song was recorded during the studio sessions for Abba’s sixth album, Voulez-Vous, but was not included on this album. It was instead released as a stand-alone single. Since then, it has been featured on Abba albums Greatest Hits Vol 2 (1979), and on both compact disc re-issues of their Voulez-Vous album, in 1997 and 2001. Abba were not keen on this song, from the recording sessions to the finished product. It took at least a week to mix the song, far longer than it took to mix any other track in Abba’s recording history, It also had an enormous amount of compression applied to it to give it a more driving sound. Benny Andersson said during an interview “we shouldn’t have released that one”, whilst Björn Ulvaeus described the song as “really lousy.” Abba band member Agnetha Fältskog said she didn’t like the song to start with as she felt it wasn’t Abba, but later on grew to like it.
